Guardian Law
According to Canadian laws, all international students under age of 18 must have qualified adult guardian. British Columbia requires international students under age of 19 to have guardianship. Guardianship is essential to ensure that international student’s educational experience in Canada would be informative, fun, and safe. 

Role of Guardian 
The guardian acts like international student's"parents" functioning like the parents' "eyes, ears, and mouth", in the role of communication bridge and link between children, parents, homestay, and schools.

Students can contact guardian first for help for any problems, including seeing a doctor. The guardian is generally responsible for help students obtain essential services to study and live in Canada, for example, to help students apply for registration, course Selection, opening bank account and mobile phone accounts, medical insurance, parent-teacher interviews, and ESL support, to ensure that homestay provides ample food and care.

On behalf of the student parents, the guardian would report sick days to school, check student's progress in school, sign report cards, and sign participation agreement for student's extracurricular activities. In return, the guardian would provide timely updates on the student to the parents.

Guardianship Documents
学生提供给学校的监护材料一般有两份，一份是加方的监护人在加拿大的律师事务所公证的监护信（标明该监护人同意担任该学生的监护人），一份是中国家长在公证处公证的父母授权监护人的公证（标明该学生的父母同意委托该监护人担任其孩子在加拿大学生生活期间的监护人），两份文件合在一起，就构成了完整的监护关系，即父母委托加拿大方面的监护人监护孩子、同时加拿大的监护人同意担任孩子在加拿大学习生活期间的监护人。学生在入境前需要将自己的联系方式行前信息告知监护人，监护人有其应尽的义务，并且移民局会抽查监护人。签证的时候需要 （1）加方的监护人在加拿大的律师事务所公证的监护信； （2）家长在中国公证处公证的父母授权监护人的公证。

Guardian Qualifications

实质性监护
监护人资格监护人必须是加拿大的公民或者是永久居民，年龄在25周岁以上。监护人不能在当地有不良的记录，最好有固定的职业。监护人可以由家长委派，也可以由申请人所申请的学校来安排；由于监护人需要在学校、家长和寄宿家庭之间扮演桥梁沟通作用，因此建议家长独立委派监护人更加合适，以避免孩子教育和孩子监护为一体所带来的弊病。按照加拿大的法律规定，一个人要受托成为监护人，必须通过当地律师事务进行公证，律师在公证并出具监护人声明书时，会严格审查监护人的身份，确保监护人资格的有效性。实质性监护有效期往往为1年。实质性的监护使得孩子能够获得真正的法定监护权力，避免因为监护责任的不到位让孩子在境外为难。素质优秀的监护人必须具有很强的责任心和爱心，同时，要善于沟通交流，要熟悉孩子教育和管理。
